Birth partners are so important & can really help you to achieve a positive birth experience. They should be there to take care of all of your emotional and practical needs, as well as advocating for you if required. However as a doula, I know it can be quite a daunting role! So what can you do to help prepare your birth partner? Here are my top tips:
1. Make sure they have been actively involved in the creation of your birth plan. Your partner may need to advocate for you, so they need to be aware of what is important to you.
2. Share your breathing techniques with them. If you happen to lose your way (which is normal at times), then they can breathe with you, helping you to find your rhythm.
3. Ensure they understand the birth journey, so they know what to expect. Sometimes it can be hard for birth partners to see their partner look uncomfortable or seemingly in pain, or if labour takes a natural pause this may be worrying. Help them understand what is normal and what they can do to help you (see point 4)
4. Teach them some massage strokes that you enjoy, this can help you produce endorphins (your natural pain reliever) helping to lower any discomfort.
5. Make sure they know you need to eat & drink throughout labour and that you will need reminding. You will most likely forget or not feel the need, but to keep the uterus working as it should, this is so important.
